The Confucius Institute joins the entire University of Nairobi community in celebrating its milestone of 50 years in operation.
Confucius was a Great thinker, Educator, Philosopher and the father of Confucianism in Chinese history. His Doctrine has had a very important influence all over the world.
Confucius Institute is an education organization, with a mission of helping people all over the world to learn Chinese language and Chinese culture.
On Monday, 19th December, 2005, Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi was launched, as the first Confucius Institute in Africa. It has been voted as the top 20 Confucius Institutes, has won the title of “Confucius Institutes of the Year” seven times consecutively from 2007 to 2018. In 2014, CIUON won the award of “Pioneer Confucius Institute” , and in 2015, it was selected one of the 15 “Global Model Confucius Institutes” among the 500 Confucius Institutes and 1000 Confucius Classrooms all over the world.
Through the Confucius Institute, the University of Nairobi and Tianjin Normal University, the two partners, have established a collaboration which includes the exchanging of students and lecturers, Chinese lecturers teaching Chinese language at the University of Nairobi.
Confucius Institute’s Scholarship that developed through the collaboration is usually given to the students of the respective schools and institutes in the University of Nairobi.
From 2006 to 2020, about 500 students in Confucius Institute were given the chance to study on scholarship in China . Particularly, in 2019, 4 students applied for PhD scholarships to study in China.
The students taking majors in journalism, business, international relations/studies and any other subjects that require language skills would also have a course in Chinese to suit their specialization.
Successful students of Chinese course in the institute would be awarded scholarships for further studies in China in masters, certificates of one year or one semester and summer training program which takes one month.
Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi has a very close connection with Chinese government, organizations and companies and always acts as a link for the schools, institutes, and establishments between Kenya and China.
The institute has three intakes in a year, January, May and September.
The Confucius institute is currently offering bachelor, diploma and certificate in Chinese language and culture. For those who would like to study for MA in Chinese language, he/she can get scholarship to finish his/her MA in China when he /she is qualified enough for Chinese .
Student Associations
Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi has four student associations, Choir, Dance Club,
Gongfu Club and Dragon Dance Team. They have participated in many important receptions and events and have been affirmed by officials at all levels in China and Kenya.
